Police responded to a report of person stabbed at Medford High School, located at 489 Winthrop Street, around 10:10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, Medford Police Captain Paul Covino reports.
Upon arrival, officers determined the boy was stabbed after a fight broke out between two students in the boys' bathroom.
The victim, who was stabbed in the chest, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Covino said. The student was said to be listed in stable condition, according to an email sent from Superintendent Marice Edouard-Vincent.
"The Medford Public Schools and Administration will not tolerate this or any type of violence," she wrote. "Any students found to be responsible for today's incident will face appropriate disciplinary action, and additional counseling will be made available."
Meanwhile a second student was taken into police custody and brought to MPD headquarters for questioning. They were later charged with one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Covino said.
A shelter-in-place, which lasted about three hours, was issued for the school as a result, Covino said. Authorities believe this was an isolated incident and said there is no on-going threat to the school faculty or students.
Covino said there will be a "visible" police presence at the school throughout the week as an extra precaution. The investigation is ongoing.
